The Gisborne area is famous for its many and excellent wines. Grapes were planted in the Gisborne area as early as 1913-1914 for home wine production. The pioneers quickly found that the climate and soil conditions around Gisborne proved abundant for grape growing.

Gisborne is the largest producer of Chardonnay grapes in New Zealand, growing over a third of the national crop. Quality rather than quantity is the focus of many of this district's winemakers and it's this approach which has seen local wines net some top national and international awards in recent years.
